The government is in favour of relocating refugees from Libya but this must be done “on a global scale” and not fall to Italy alone, foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Wednesday.

“We are looking at involving humanitarian organisations like the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR in identifying people in need of international protection who are detained in Libyan camps,” said Alfano.

“But the relocation of these people must occur on a global scale and not just involve Libya and Italy,” he said.

He rejected criticism of the Italian government for allegedly abetting the detention of migrants in Libya’s notorious camps by helping its coastguard turn back boats in the Mediterranean, saying Italy would not “turn a blind eye” to human rights violations.

“We are world champions of human rights and have saved half a million lives in the Mediterranean,” Alfano stated.

Migration is one of the main themes of the Forum Med – Mediterranean Dialogues summit being held at the Italian foreign ministry from 30 November to 2 December, Alfano noted.
