Ahead of a summit of European Union leaders in Brussels, Italy’s prime minister Paolo Gentiloni on Wednesday urged a faster pace of European integration, which he said should not “move at the pace of the slowest”.
The European Union must not “resign itself to the idea of small steps forward with the pace being dictated by the slowest carriages,” he told members of the Italian parliament.
“These are the countries which only want the advantages of EU membership without sharing its commitments, values and shared objectives,” Gentiloni went on.
“Italy is asking for more Europe,” he said.
The EU summit is taking place on Thursday and Friday.
